Maureen McGinley

December 9, 1945 - October 4, 2013

McGinley, Maureen
Ypsilanti, MI

The world has suffered a great loss with the passing of Maureen McGinley on the morning of Friday, October 4, 2013.

Maureen was born December 9, 1945 in Scranton, PA. The family moved to Ypsilanti, MI shortly thereafter. Maureen was preceded by the passing of her parents Bernard and Ruth E. (Vought) McGinley. She is survived by her husband of 27 years Stephen Silverberg, her children, Bridgit Peeper and Brendan Peeper, sister Sharon Woodbridge of Bethesda, MD, brother-in-law Andrew Porter of Brooklyn Heights, NY, many relatives and a vast number of friends, ex-players and their families as well as coworkers, neighbors and the city in which she grew up, Ypsilanti, MI.

Maureen, wearing a warrior queen helmet and a most amazing collection of socks to her radiation and chemo treatments was an inspiration to all her care staff, friends and family for almost a full year when the woman whose vocabulary did not contain the word “quit” finally passed away quietly in her sleep at home.

Maureen had the ability to touch, inspire and bring the best out in everyone she met. Her ability as a winning coach brought Championships in every year of her coaching career in boys basketball in the Ann Arbor Recreation League and her AAU team was challenged only by those players who later became the University of Michigan’s “Fab Five.”

Maureen possessed an amazing ability to deeply touch all those around her, personally and professionally and was a source of joy and comfort to her family and friends.

Her cooking skills were legendary, matched by her interior design ability and a unique personal sense of style.

Maureen attained her BS in Human Resources Management from Concordia University, Ann Arbor with a 4.0 point average while simultaneously being an amazing mother, starting a new marriage in a new home and finishing another winning season in sports.

She was Director of “Humane” Resources at Business Resources, Inc. in Ann Arbor and Canton and was most lately employed in Human Resources at The Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan.

The quality that Maureen possessed to reach out to everyone she touched and so greatly affect them in such a positive manner was extraordinary. The ripples from her influence have spread very wide and have made her legacy a gift.

Maureen never saw age, gender, race, orientation or physical status but instead looked into the heart and soul of everyone she ever met.

Her wishes were for everyone to know she said “Bye.”

The memorial service will be 11 am Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Stark Funeral Service with Rev. Dave McNeil officiating. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 9:30 am until time of service.

Maureen was always filled with life and laughter, and she'll make a good team member to welcome us all as we enter.

May her family be comforted by knowing that she had a heart of gold for all she came in contact with along her path here on earth.

It was a blessing to have her as a fun classmate.  She'll be missed til we meet again..

It has taken me a while to get to a point of reflecting my thoughts on the loss of Maureen, Dennis, and Earl, all of whom I knew quit well.

Maureen "Mo" was one of my closest and dearest friends.  We had kept in touch over the years as we had with Bridgette, her daughter.  Her dry humor and sensitivity to issues, both personal and social, were always an inspiration that things would get better.  I, along with Clarence (Hollifield) and Randolph (Brewer), visited Mo shortly before her death and she showed an inner strength and courage that continues to give us inspiration, optimism, and confidence to move forward in a very positive way.  Rosita and I miss her dearly as a void in our lives will not be filled quickly.
